Originating in the tribal regions of Maharashtra, this art style has captivated people with its unique visual language and symbolic storytelling. Warli Folk Art is a traditional tribal art form that has been passed down through generations in Maharashtra, India. It is a form of expression that captures the essence of rural life and tribal traditions. The simplicity and charm of Warli Art have made it increasingly popular among art enthusiasts, students, and those interested in cultural preservation.
Warli Art traces its roots back to ancient times when tribal communities used it as a means of communication and expression. The art form is believed to have originated around 2500 BCE, making it one of the oldest forms of art in India. Over the centuries, Warli Art has evolved and adapted to changing times, but its core essence has remained intact, reflecting the indigenous way of life.
One of the key features of Warli Art is its simplicity. The art form primarily consists of geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, and squares. These shapes are skillfully arranged to depict human figures, animals, and elements of nature. The use of white pigment against a dark background creates a striking contrast, enhancing the overall visual impact of the artwork.
Warli Art holds deep cultural significance for tribal communities in Maharashtra. It is closely associated with rituals, celebrations, and daily life activities. The art form often portrays scenes from agricultural practices, weddings, and harvest festivals. Through their art, the Warli people pass on their traditions, values, and mythology to future generations.
Warli Art has transcended its traditional boundaries and has gained recognition in the contemporary art world. Many artists have incorporated Warli elements into their work, infusing it with a modern twist. The influence of Warli Art can also be seen in fashion, home decor, and design, where its simple yet captivating patterns have found a place in the hearts of many.
Preserving Warli Art is crucial for the continuity of this rich cultural heritage. Efforts have been made to conserve and promote Warli Art through various initiatives. Community involvement and education play a significant role in preserving this art form. Workshops, exhibitions, and cultural exchange programs have been organized to raise awareness and ensure the survival of Warli Art for future generations.
One inspiring example of the preservation of Warli Art can be found in the village of Gondmohadi in Maharashtra. The villagers have taken it upon themselves to pass on their knowledge of Warli Art to younger generations. They organize workshops and training sessions where children and adults can learn the techniques and motifs of Warli Art. This village serves as a shining example of how communities can actively contribute to the preservation of their cultural heritage.
The impact of Warli Art extends beyond traditional boundaries. Many contemporary artists have found inspiration in the simplicity and symbolism of this art form. They have incorporated Warli elements into their work, creating a fusion of traditional and modern artistic expressions. This cross-pollination of ideas ensures the continuation of Warli Art's legacy.
To appreciate the beauty and significance of Warli Art, one can visit various museums and exhibitions dedicated to showcasing this art form. These spaces provide an immersive experience, allowing visitors to explore the history, techniques, and cultural context of Warli Art. They serve as platforms for artists to exhibit their creations and for enthusiasts to deepen their understanding of this unique art form.
Warli Art has transcended the boundaries of canvas and has become a part of everyday life. From decorative items in homes to clothing designs, the influence of Warli Art can be seen in various aspects of daily routines. This integration of art into everyday life serves as a testament to the enduring appeal and relevance of Warli Art.

India is a land of diverse cultures and traditions, each with its own unique art forms. Among the rich tapestry of Indian folk arts, Madhubani paintings stand out as a vibrant and captivating form of expression. Originating from the specific region of Madhubani in Bihar, these paintings have gained recognition and appreciation both within India and on the global stage. In this blog post, we will delve into the history, techniques, cultural significance, and global impact of Madhubani paintings.
Madhubani paintings have a long and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. The art form is believed to have originated during the time of the Ramayana, an ancient Hindu epic. The women of the Mithila region, which encompasses present-day Madhubani, started painting intricate designs on the walls of their homes to celebrate special occasions and religious rituals. Over time, these wall paintings evolved into the distinct art form known as Madhubani paintings.
One of the distinguishing features of Madhubani paintings is the use of natural dyes and pigments. The artists extract vibrant colors from natural sources such as flowers, leaves, and minerals, creating a visually stunning palette. The paintings are characterized by intricate brushwork and patterns, often depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and everyday life. The artists employ fine lines and delicate details, showcasing their exceptional skill and precision.
Madhubani paintings hold deep cultural significance for the people of the region. These artworks are not merely decorative; they are a means of preserving and celebrating the local traditions and identity. The motifs used in Madhubani paintings often carry symbolic meanings. For example, depictions of fish represent fertility, while peacocks symbolize love and prosperity. Through these paintings, the artists connect with social and cultural events, ensuring that the traditions are passed down through generations.
The world of Madhubani paintings is adorned with the talent of numerous renowned artists. Artists like Sita Devi, Ganga Devi, and Bharti Dayal have made significant contributions to the art form, showcasing their unique styles and creativity. Each artist brings their own interpretation and personal touch to the traditional art, creating a diverse range of Madhubani paintings that captivate the viewer.
The beauty and cultural significance of Madhubani paintings have not gone unnoticed on the global stage. In a remarkable achievement, India showcased Madhubani paintings in the G-20 meeting held in Delhi in 2023. This recognition at an international platform highlighted the artistic excellence and cultural heritage of Madhubani paintings. It not only brought the art form to a global audience but also instilled a sense of pride among the artists and the people of Madhubani.
Madhubani paintings are not just exquisite artworks; they are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of India. These paintings have transcended their humble origins on the walls of village homes and gained immense recognition worldwide. By exploring the history, techniques, cultural significance, and global impact of Madhubani paintings, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the art form and encourage the preservation of other Indian folk-art traditions. Here are a few pointers, which can come in handy if we are thinking of ideas/design for a makeover or addition or renovation to our exteriors. Exterior could be deck, screen porch, patio, backyard, driveway.
1. We should put attention to the durability, usability and sustainability of the outdoor furniture, which we are going to use. With climate change in effect, need to emphasis on weather, which will act as a catalyst in deciding the kind of material being used like if it will be rainy, very dry, humid, cold, damp etc.
2. Outdoor space could be a reflection of the inner space or interiors. Can use the same decor style/theme in selecting the furnitures, accessories. Example - Can Implement tropical or nautical theme to outdoor spaces as well. Adding nature, flora, fauna and brightness to decor is very trendy. Will discuss different theme styles in another post.
3. Utilize the outdoor space as per the your needs and preference. We can choose from various options like outdoor kitchen, fire pit, entertainment area, waterfall, fish pond, flower garden, tree house. Space and budget planning play an important role in this decision.
4. Using neutral tone wall/fence color, red brick or stacked stone exteriors are trendy features to look out for.
5. Furniture materials like vinyl, resin fiber, polywood (sustainable option), wrought iron, steel make a good list to choose from.
6. Garages to be colored with the front door color. Quite popular thing to do these days. Driveway could be pave with stone, bricks or cement itself.
7. Plants, seasonal flowers, bushes make an important part of gardens/exteriors. Always holds true anytime, anywhere.

]]>Let's talk about my favorite element or subject of decoration. I love nature and love to bring nature indoors wherever and whenever possible. Nature to me is all about plants, fresh air, water, sunlight, greenery, positive vibes. I try to incorporate as many aspects of it by using various mediums per se accessories.
Use potted plants, flowers in vase, succulents in plant hangers to have instant greenery all around adding freshness to the air quality as well. Acts as a natural purifier and humidifier for our homes. Place sheer veil/curtains over glass doors and windows in order to increase the sunlight exposure making the place more vibrant and lively. Utilize indoor water fountains (sitting at desk or standing) to accentuate the interiors with the sound of free flow water adding calmness and positivity to the indoor environment. These are some of the usage of natural, real, outdoor elements inside (which I do) but sometimes unreal things also complement our style and efforts in achieving a certain goal. One of the examples for that could be the artwork or paintings of nature, flora, fauna, landscape. I use this quite often wherever required and the result is amazing.

Decoration is not a one time permanent thing. Decoration is an ever changing process. It grows with us and we can never peak that process. It keeps evolving with us over time - with our personal experiences, latest trends, seasons, preferences, safety features (for toddlers), accessibility (for parents).
It is just like a subject which has various chapters, which are uncovered in different phases of life. Phases could be from being single to married, from married to being parents, from single family to joint family, from renting an apartment to moving into owned house. All these phases act as external factors or stimuli for us to adapt to our environments and challenge our creative thinking and capabilities to go above and beyond our created limits. It is an art, which we keep learning, improving, mastering. There is never a saturation point in this field as it is so dynamic. We have to be on our toes with the trends, seasonalities, festivities and so on.
Decoration is definitely personal as we are trying to put or showcase ourselves in and around our house. It is a mere reflection of how we see and perceive things just like any artist does. We are the torchbearers of our style and can pass our tips and tricks to the next generation. Enjoy this art with each passing moment as it only provides joy to us and to the people around us. Keep decorating and enjoy this journey which satisfy you and your soul. We might as well surprise us and and be proud of ourselves of what we have created or achieved by following our sense of decoration/interiors in the space we have.
Hope you all must have encountered this feeling at some point in time!

A topic, which just came to my mind. Do we believe in Vaastu or Feng Shui for our decorating style? Should we incorporate that or not? Is it beneficial to use it as per the rules? We always keep questioning this to ourselves - if this is mandatory or not. It definitely is our personal choice and no one can ask us to do or not do it.
We should do what gives us internal piece and harmony. In the overall decorating process, we definitely do use some elements of that (knowingly or unknowingly) like placing idol Ganesha in our home/office, placing Laughing Buddha, putting green Bamboo Plants, hanging wind-chimers (bamboo or glass or metal).
We want to add beauty, nature and utilize the maximum benefits of it in whichever way we use. The sole reason of doing vaastu is to have positive vibes, positive energy, happiness, good health, wealth and good luck in our homes/ lives. We should always strive to achieve that in our day to day lives (through our KARMA) and try to help others in the process too. A food for thought, i believe!!!!Some tips (for maximum benefits):
1. Place Ganesha in East or West direction. Ganesha in sitting position with trunk on the left side and modak is the best one to buy.
2. Put Laughing Buddha in the main door entrance or south-east corner of the house.
3. Put bamboo wind-chimer in east direction and metal wind-chimer in west direction.
4. Put Bamboo plant on dining table, office, kitchen island.

A few questions below will help us enlighten our own strengths and uniqueness when it comes to decoration/interiors. It requires some introspection as we need to ask these to ourselves. Hopefully you enjoy reading and answering this. A total self-exercise :)
1. Is it maximalist or minimalist - Do we prefer to keep as many things as we can or buy the things that we really need?
2. Do we like antique, classic, vintage pieces or very stylish, modern, sleek things?
3. Do we prefer soft, neutral color palette for our house or bold, hot/cold colors?
4. Are we risk takers - not afraid to experiment with our decoration style (be it DIY or Renovation or try totally new thing)?
5. Are we open to learn (decorating/interiors) from other mediums? It can be persons (friends/family), TV shows, movies, books, blogs, traveling?
6. Do we prefer to buy everything brand new or love to explore garage sale/yard sale/ antique shops?
7. Do we decorate our house as per the occasions or want to keep it the same all year round (with a constant theme of decoration)?
8. How do we get ideas for our decoration - inner instincts, blogs, photographs, pinterest(social media), magazines, friends or family?
9. Do we like to make a plan (write it down) of what and how do to the decoration or just do it as and when we go (more like spontaneous)?
10. Last but not the least: How do we prefer to do the shopping - Going to the retail stores physically or simply shop it online without comprising our own comfort?

What does house decor mean to us? It could be decorating house with furniture, curtains, lightings, chandeliers, appliances, plants, or simply decorating the Walls. For some - it could be doing beautiful paints on wall, for some - it could be a putting up a family tree (with pride) with the photo gallery, captured with precious moments, for some - it could be carefully placing the framed paintings on the wall (either self-painted or bought or custom-created), for some - it could be utilizing wall accents/hangings to adorn the walls just like beautiful jewelry.
Let's talk about Wall Accents. They come in various shapes, sizes, forms, styles, functionalities. The options can be - Candle scones, Decorative/Gilded mirrors, Macrame wall hangings, Geometric patterns wall art, metal wall art, hanging ceramic plates, hanging planters, hanging decorative lanterns (glass/metal). Wall accents give a new meaning to the walls by creating a story in their own way. They tell our preferences, history, taste and likings. How about we talk about the foundation of our house - the mighty strong Walls. As we all know that to give a character or personality to any room, we need to create accent walls. We can have that accent wall serve as the focal point of the room and things could just flow around it. The focal point normally acts as a conversation starter with friends or family.
Accent Walls can be achieved by using creative Wall Decor. Wall decor items could be good HD quality canvas framed painting, printed photographs, wall hangings, accent lighting and last but not the least our forgotten wall clocks essentials (in these digital days).
Wallpapers, decals and murals are also good options to create accent walls. The other way is to color that wall with special color so as to have the full attention of the room. We can have good color schema for that like a purple/mauve colored accent wall for beige colored room or maybe an icy blue colored accent wall to go with grey colored room. Can experiment with different color combinations.

How about we talk about DIY decoration (sounds interesting!). We all like to do some crafts and artsy work at some point in our lives. We try to use already available things at home and try to be creative in order to decorate house in our very own personal style.
Just sharing some handy DIY things. We can use gloss scotch tape around candles, jars, pots, vase making them beautiful instantly. Can spray paint lampshades or even put fabric cloth/burlap around lampshades making them warm, stunning and appealing. Use your favorite wallpaper around fireplace mantel to give it more character and long lasting. Use glass rocks, crystals, beads on candle scones to add glamour.
We can have a picture wall/ wall of fame/ gallery on any wall which we want to use as an accent or a focal point of the house or room. Select your favorite photos and see the magic in front of your eyes. We can have the photos printed (color or B/W) simply and have them framed, or print them on canvas / mounted ones / aluminum plates. Can print individual photos or make a collage. It all comes down to own preferences and choices. Let's talk about furniture placement today. We all want to have the latest and greatest furniture pieces at our homes. Space is the main attraction of any room. How spacious means how vast edges it has, and we want to shift the focus from edges to the centre of the room by decorating the space by placing furnitures, rugs, wall art, chandeliers. Thus, it will come handy if we have some furniture placement tips on the top of our mind.
Furniture placement should never obstruct the traffic flow of the house. No sharp corner or uneven objects should be place in the common pathways of the house. The distance between each furniture pieces should be constant all around. The placement of the furnitures should be balanced means the size of the furnitures should be in proportion of the room. Example a very big living room can't have many small pieces. Maintain symmetry while placing them.
The paintings should be hung always at the eye level, not too high or low from the floor. There should be 3-6 inches gap from the top of the sofa to the bottom of the painting. Paintings should be placed at the center of the wall creating a focal point for our eyes. If we have one or more paintings, symmetry matters a lot. The spacing between artworks should be between 3-6 inches.
